Network hardware’s every brand is a little different that’s why we can’t cover all of them. It would be good if you follow the instructions that come with the extender. There are two different ways to go about it.

  • Setup with a PC
  • Setup with a Phone or Tablet

Setup With a PC

  • First of all, you have to write down your SSID (name) and password for your existing Wi-Fi network. If you can’t remember them.
  • For the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, do the same, when they are different.
  • For a wired connection, you’ll need a desktop or laptop with an Ethernet cable.

Note

You’ll need to connect to the default Wi-Fi network, If your computer doesn’t have an Ethernet port, So the extender broadcasts, that are different from the one already in your home.

It’s a “WIFI_EXTENDER” or something similar.

If it’s asking for a password then check out the instructions.

  • First, you have to plug the extender into the wall, then just plug the Ethernet cable into both the extender and your computer.
  • You can connect directly to the extender From your home Wi-Fi network.

Note

You’ll lose web connection in both cases.

  • Make sure it’s set to “Extender” mode, not “AP” or “Access Point If there’s a switch on the side of your extender.
  • It might need a few minutes to boot up.
  • Now, open a web browser on your computers like chrome or edge.
  • Enter the extender’s web-based interface in the browser.
  • It is a simple numerical address on the local network, it’s either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
  • In the URL bar, try to enter both of those, a login prompt will appear.
  • If those networks don’t work then check out the instructions that come with your extender. It may be printed on the side of the sticker.
  • Some of the Netgear extenders use “www.mywifiext.net,” and some Asus models use “repeater.asus.com,” etcetera.
  • If you are unable to find it then google your repeater brand and then add ‘login’ then you’ll find it enough.
  • When you reach out to the page, you have to log in with the default username and password.
  • This is usually “admin” and “password,”. But don’t think much about that because you can change the setting menu later.
  • If this username and password didn’t work then try a factory reset of the device.
  • You’ll need a button to press with a pin or paperclip for this.

When you log in, it will start to guide you through you connect the local network step by step. But it doesn’t happen then here’s what you can do

  • For your extender find the Wi-Fi settings page, then you have to enter the same name for the SSID and password like you use with your WiFi router.
  • The extender will log into your network via a router. It’s the same that you do with your laptop or phone.
  • When you log in and the connection is stable then this will rebroadcast the same data connection on the same SSID through your home. It allows easy connections via other devices.
  • For both a 2.4GHz network and a 5GHz network, most modern extenders will have settings.
  • Ensure that the SSID and the password can match the setting on your existing router.
  • Now you have to double-check if everything is set up correctly.
  • After that click ‘Save’ or ‘Apply’ then you are ready to go. It will take only a few minutes.

Setup With A Phone Or Tablet

With the default SSID and password, if you can connect the Extender’s WiFi network then you can follow the same steps as above with your phone’s browser. But if you failed to do this then download the appropriate app from the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store on Android. And for the extender, it’s the Netgear nighthawk. There will be a link or QR code with the corresponding app.

Conclusion

We have explained everything about ‘How To Set Up A Wi-fi Extender’. Always remember to keep in mind that you are using the same Wi-Fi network as your existing router.

Then go for the steps on the app, which are pretty similar to the one for PC setup that we have explained above then save your setting.

Now you’re ready to go.
